Korean Skin Treatment Aftercare: What Foreigners Need to Know

October 7, 2026

Quick answer: Korean skin treatment aftercare usually means avoiding saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths, alcohol and intense exercise for 24–48 hours, using gentle skincare and daily sunscreen, and not rubbing treated areas. After Botox, avoid pressing the area; after fillers and boosters, expect swelling or bumps for 1–3 days; after lasers, protect skin from sun and skip exfoliants.

Why is aftercare so important for foreigners?

Korean clinics are efficient: treatment can take 20 minutes and you are back on the street. That speed is great for travelers, but it also means most of your recovery happens without the clinic watching. Good aftercare protects your results and lowers the risk of irritation, pigment changes or infection.

Foreign visitors face a few extra challenges: long walks in the sun, hotel skincare you are not used to, spicy food and drinks with friends, a visit to a jjimjilbang (Korean sauna), and a long flight home. Korean skin treatment aftercare is about planning around these, not giving up your trip. If you are still choosing a clinic, our guide What to Expect at a Korean Skin Clinic explains how aftercare is usually given at checkout.

What aftercare applies to almost every treatment?

  1. Skip heat for 24–48 hours. That means saunas, jjimjilbang, hot baths, hot yoga and very hot showers on the face.
  2. Avoid intense exercise for 24–48 hours to limit swelling and bruising.
  3. Keep skincare simple. Gentle cleanser, plain moisturizer and sunscreen. Pause retinoids, AHA/BHA and scrubs for several days, or as your doctor advises.
  4. Do not rub, massage or pick. This includes facial massage devices and cleansing brushes.
  5. Use sunscreen every day , reapplied when outdoors, plus a hat.
  6. Limit alcohol for 1–2 days , as it can increase swelling and bruising.
  7. Sleep on your back the first night after injectables if you can.

What should you do after each type of treatment?

Treatment Normal reactions Key aftercare
Botox Tiny marks, mild headache Stay upright a few hours; no massage or sauna 24–48 h
Fillers Swelling, bruising 2–3 days Gentle cold compress; avoid pressure on the area
Skin boosters Bumps 24–48 h, small bruises No makeup on day 1 if advised; do not squeeze bumps
Lifting devices Mild redness, tenderness 0–1 day Moisturize; avoid heat for a day
Pico or laser toning Redness for hours Strict SPF; skip exfoliants
CO2, Fraxel, Potenza Redness, roughness or crusting 2–7 days Healing ointment or cream as given; no picking

After Botox

After Botox in Seoul, stay upright for a few hours, and avoid rubbing the area, facials and saunas for 24–48 hours. Results appear in 3–7 days and peak at about 2 weeks. If one side looks different after 2 weeks, send photos to the clinic.

After fillers

After dermal fillers, swelling peaks in the first 1–2 days. Use gentle cold compresses (wrapped, not ice directly on skin) and avoid pressure such as tight glasses or face-down sleeping. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be adjusted or dissolved if needed with filler dissolving injections.

After skin boosters

After Rejuran Healer or Juvelook, you will see small raised bumps for 24–48 hours. Do not press or massage them. Rejuran is typically repeated 3–4 times 2–4 weeks apart, so aftercare becomes routine.

How do you care for skin after laser treatments?

Lasers are where aftercare has the biggest impact on results, especially for pigment.

  • Gentle lasers such as pico laser or toning: use sunscreen daily, avoid scrubs and acids for several days and keep skin hydrated. Pigment can temporarily look darker before it fades.
  • Resurfacing such as CO2 fractional laser: follow the clinic’s ointment or cream instructions, do not pick crusts and avoid makeup until the skin has closed, usually about 5–7 days.
  • Melasma patients : heat and sun can trigger flare-ups, so strict protection matters. See melasma treatment in Seoul.

After peels and acne care, expect some dryness or flaking. Do not peel flakes off by hand.

Which warning signs need attention?

Normal: mild redness, swelling, small bumps, light bruising and tightness that improve day by day. Contact the clinic promptly if you notice:

  • Pain that increases instead of improving, especially after fillers.
  • Skin turning white, grey, blue or dusky near an injection site.
  • Blisters, oozing, yellow crusts or fever after a laser or peel.
  • Swelling that is getting worse after day 3.
  • Vision changes or difficulty breathing: seek urgent medical care immediately.

Does aftercare affect the cost of treatment?

Aftercare products are sometimes included and sometimes sold separately, and some clinics offer calming masks or LED as part of the session. When comparing quotes, ask what is included: numbing, calming care, aftercare cream, and follow-up checks. 10% VAT is usually added to cosmetic procedures. See the current price list of your clinic for its menu.

Planning your visit to a skin clinic in Hongdae, Seoul

If you stay in Hongdae, it is easy to return to a nearby clinic for a check during your trip. Hongik Univ. Station is on Line 2, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line and the AREX Airport Railroad, with direct trains to Incheon and Gimpo airports when you leave.

  • Language: ask for English- or Japanese-speaking staff who explain aftercare clearly.
  • Consultation: many clinics take messages by WhatsApp or KakaoTalk. Send photos and travel dates, and ask for written aftercare.
  • Confirm details: who performs the treatment, the exact shots, units or cc, and whether VAT is included.
  • Prices: check the current Hongdae clinic price list and ask whether aftercare products are included.

Frequently asked questions

When can I wear makeup after a Korean skin treatment?

After Botox, lifting devices and gentle lasers, makeup is usually fine the next day, sometimes the same evening. After skin boosters, wait until the next day if advised. After CO2 laser or other resurfacing, wait until the skin has closed, typically around 5–7 days. Use clean brushes and gentle products.

Can I go to a jjimjilbang after treatment?

Avoid jjimjilbang, saunas and hot baths for at least 24–48 hours after most treatments, and longer after resurfacing lasers or peels. Heat increases swelling and redness and can irritate healing skin. If you want to experience a Korean sauna, plan it before your treatment day.

Can I drink alcohol after Botox or fillers?

It is best to limit alcohol for 1–2 days after injectables. Alcohol can widen blood vessels and increase swelling and bruising. A small amount is unlikely to ruin results, but heavy drinking the same night is not recommended, especially before a flight.

Can I exercise after a skin treatment?

Light walking is fine. Avoid intense workouts, hot yoga and swimming for about 24–48 hours after injectables and most lasers, and longer after resurfacing, because sweat, heat and chlorine can irritate the skin. Your doctor may give a specific timeline for your treatment.

What if I have questions after returning home?

Message the clinic with clear photos and a short description. Clinics experienced with foreigners can often advise by WhatsApp or KakaoTalk. Keep a record of the treatment, product, amount and date so a local doctor can help if needed, and seek urgent local care for severe symptoms.
